At age 76, I am in the process of becoming a fossil. Hence the title of this book. Diagenesis is the physical, chemical, and biological process that transforms sediments into sedimentary rock. It is within the sedimentary rock layer that fossils can be found. The poems in the book were written over a fifty-year period, during which some of my ideas and beliefs changed as much as my domicile. Yet, I do not disavow any of them. I have tried to keep what is true or may have been true, at least for me, from each stage of my life. Finally, the poems are organized partly chronologically and partly thematically, so some poems that were written later are grouped with poems with similar themes.
